I have 12 Roundhouse hoppers with the white metal frames. I know before I paint them they need to be very well cleaned. Do I need to prime them before painting and what color would be most appropriate for the finish.

Are you airbrushing ot rattle canning it? Scale coatII seems to be self priming.

As for the color, it all depends on your prototype I would think. I think nickel plate painted theirs black. I think.

then again are you just talking about the metal frames and nothing else?

I just did that to some DRGW. I used Testors flat black, no primer. Thing is, the inserts will not fit without sanding and fitting each one first. They still do not go all the way in, but almost. Very nice cars. I did not body mount couplers.

I also painted mine black and then a (very) healthy rust coat. Some have reported that you should remove the end tangs to allow coupler freedom, but mine do not seem to rub (running MTs).

    Steve:

How did you distress the tops of the cars? Nice weathering and very nice interior weathering.

    Thanks, Flash!
I started with a four-pack, and hit them with a hot-air gun (for shrink tubing). Immediately melted one car. [IMG] The remaining three survivors, now nicely and subtly warped, were attacked with a fairly hot soldering iron. I just heated it up, and glanced it off the car edges quickly at random angles. It will melt the plastic for the split second it is in contact, looking like dents and dings. Like most things N-scale, less is more.

Car interiors were painted with washes, dry-brushed with various paints and then chalked. Next time I do these, I'm going to beat up the interiors more.

Thanks, Steve. I am thinking about using something like a small Christmas tree bulb. Maybe a light with a rheostat to adjust the heat. I haven't really started yet.
