Don't mean to horn in on Jim, but when I seen this posted this morning I thought of the post that Wuttermelon posted back on page 5: http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine...-Rock-Island-Model-Parade&p=888273#post888273 Also just noticed that we've had 10,000 views on this thread! Yay!
Ah. I'd forgotten about that one. It can get lost in a 25 page topic! Remember way back about page two, when Mark commented about lack of interest in this thread? Keep it going!
Speaking of page 1, my apologies for missing your question. I built my AB6 from a BLI E7B (their E6B's had yet to be released when I started the project). Full write-up here - http://www.spookshow.net/layout6h.html -Mark
It is a unit I have wanted to do for years and thought it would be a nice one to take to prototype meets but I know someone who may want it if he see's it. If the offer is good enough...
Just sat here and went through the entire thread. Absolutely amazing !!! I LOVE the AB6 !!! I remember those things going through New Lenox (where I was raised). I have GOT to have one of those someday. JnJ used to make shells for them. i was kinda' hoping that someone had done an Alco C415 so I could pick their brain a bit. I was actually surprised that nobody modeled "Christine" !!! I think the biggest surprise was how many people actually LIKE that Damn blue !!! YUK !!! The best blue engine was the "Independence", but I can't imagine anyone modeling that any time soon. All my Rock Island stuff is box stock, but with Kato recently releasing the E5, I'm having visions of #630 !!! I remember seeing strings of stock cars known as "Pig Palaces". Did CRIP own these ??? GREAT JOB, EVERYONE !!!!
Thanks, guys. As custom locomotive projects go, that one was pretty easy. On the other hand, I was looking at pictures of C415's the other day and thinking it would be fun to try and build one, but I'm not sure how one would even get started on such a project. Maybe one of our Shapeways wizards will make a shell some day. -Mark
The stantions are from Gold Metal Models and I'll be soldering handrails made with .008 phosphor-bronze wire from Tichy.
Finally looking close to ending this. I waited almost three weeks for number board decals so the Rock Island #4710 sat on my work bench. Just a bit more weathering and she is done. I'll get some more shots when it is done.
Thanks guys, this is one I have always wanted to do. This is the first locomotive that I installed Z scale couplers and I really like the looks plus they do work with the N scale couplers.
Jim, I'm gonna try to stir up the hornets nest now. Please don't take me wrong, I'm not trying to nit pick your unit or your work, but I am more curious than anything. I see you did not paint the top of the nose blue, from everything I found and I can see this is correct. You painted the the rear pilot and steps RED, this is what I have always thought is should be. Last night I was snooping around the net and seen that someone did an HO [I think] model in this scheme but he painted his rear pilot and steps white. http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=M102OYheUbPdiM&tbnid=Ub_-lVS6qoNQEM:&ved=0CAgQjRwwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dufordmodelworks.com%2FRI4710a.html&ei=V5N2UY7rOsPV2AX6kIGQAw&psig=AFQjCNFskVKPEFeBdWa3TNknHH3lM1aNqw&ust=1366811864032187 I also read somewhere is that they replaced the rear pilot and step and they got painted white as well. I have only found one picture that kind of confirms this; http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/pictures%5C51894%5Clf.%20RI%204710%20GP40%20Little%20Rock%20ARK%2005-06-84.jpg If you look, you can kind of see the the steps look white. So I'm curious, do you have a pic showing that the rear steps were red, not white?
