g'day... ...or has anyone else experience in stripping an AZL C44-9Ws ? I've once tried to strip a Ajin N scale C60AC and that was nearly impossible (ok, 98% alcohol solved the problem then...) is the AZL Dash-9 a brass engine as well ? so it should be possible with alcohol, right ? any thoughts ? thank you...
It's an Ajin loco, with some kind of epoxy paint or even Powder Coat! Miserable stuff. Hot Mung Cider, or Phenol!
Steve, I only know of two AZLs that were strip. One was strip by Harold Werner, and he doesn't remember what he used. Tim also strip a AZL, but he swore never to strip a AZL again. He used a industrial strenght stripper, and it took almost a year to have it completely strip. My suggestion is dont strip it. Just give it a light coat of primer.
Here ye' here ye'!!! I second the motion John! Ugh! Nasty memories! Harold Grady stripped a SD45 in about 2 hours with something he thinks he got at Sears! What that was, I could never get him interested enough to find out. I tried many different paint strippers but the only thing that worked, and slowly, was a enamel type stripper from Home Depot. It's a gel. It worked slowly and I had to change the stripping agent about once a week. The C44-9 was a Norfolk Southern black. After about 6-8 months, about 1/2 the paint was stripped using the stripper. The paint actually turned a bit brittle. I was able to carefully scrape the majority of the rest of the paint. Took about 1-2 hours. Lots of nooks and crannies. Dreaded experience! I tried (with no effect) ELO 90%+ Alcohol Brake Fluid Paint Thinner Paint Remover two types of strippers and the gell stripper that finally worked! Never again! Hobo Tim
The C44-9 STEALTH! The C44-9 Brass AZL Locomotive that was modified and re-painted was one that Jeffrey White owned. I did not do the re-painting so I can not say if it's shell was stripped before re-painting. Jeffrey might know! I'll ask him. If it was, I would like to know what was used on it! Perhaps it is not all AZL paint jobs, or colors, but perhaps only certain colors. Like the NS black paint!!!!!!!!! Who knows! OK, getting back to the AZL STEALTH, I have placed it on ebay at Jeffrey's suggestion! I would keep it and re-paint it into a BNSF Warbonnet, but I'd prefer not to go thru all that work. Therefore, ebay it is! Anyone interested in it? DCC modified! This is something I need to do to the two AZL C44-9's that I have. Hopefully I'll be able to go DCC within the next year! Hobo Tim
BC Rail ? no I have an inquiry to paint an ATSF one into a BNSF Heritage I... (or is someone interested in a shell swap/trade ?)
Painful! It's very painful to know what I know! The NS Stealth I have from Jeffrey White was, in the beginning, a BNSF Heritage I. Ugh! I'd trade shells in a heartbeat for it is a AT&SF shell I would like to have. I want to change the Santa Fe to BNSF Warbonnet! Hobo Tim
I tried to find someone to trade my DRGW SD45 shells for a BN set, but there were no takers, so I just bought a pair of BN SD45's. Now I plan on repainting my DRGW units into NP units.
WHAT!!!! NO!!!! I can understand an NS or even an ATSF, but a BNSF I. Yikes! Those are in high demand! Rob
Someone else had it done! Rob, I did not do this! The box the Stealth is in says RLW BNSF C44-9W with a check by the #967 roadnumber. As far as I know, this Stealth use to be that BNSF Pumpkin I paint scheme! Hobo Tim
