Union Pacific Settles Retaliation Suit SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Thursday that it settled a lawsuit against Union Pacific Railroad Co. concerning a worker who complained of discrimination. The San Francisco district office of the commission said the railroad agreed to pay $67,500 to a former worker who was fired after filing a discrimination complaint with the EEOC. Valerie McCarthy, on whose behalf the commission filed the suit, had worked nearly 30 years for Union Pacific. The EEOC said in its suit that her managers at the Oakland Intermodal Terminal deliberately assigned her jobs she wasn't qualified for, then fired her for not doing them well. Union Pacific denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement but agreed to new training for managers at the facility where McCarthy worked. - The San Francisco Business Times
John, any news on the suit UP brought against Steamscenes, Mike's Train House and Lionel? I just received my "illegal" 2007 UP Steamscenes calendar from Nils Huxtable. :confused2:
The Huxtable defense fund website: http://www.helpsteamscenes.com/ And an interesting letter written to UP from John F. Buffington, retired Judge of the Superior Court of the State of California: http://www.helpsteamscenes.com/buffington.html
Real Letter Is Judge Buffington's letter real? It seems the Superior Court of the State of California has an address in Austin, Texas. There must be some explanation for that.
At top of the letter, it does say "Retired." So he doesn't need to still be in California. Retirees often seek different locations for residence. How about someone in Texas contacting him to verify? Boxcab E50

I wonder if that's Nils' good friend Brenda up on the right? BTW his 2007 UP Calendar, is, as usual, EXCELLENT. I don't understand UP's motivation.
Sounds to me like she got cheated real bad, burned out of a retirement after putting in her 30 years. And UP got off the hook by only having to pay her 1 year's pay, instead of providing a well earned retirement. mg:
Authenticity of letter from Judge Buffington To those who wondered whether the letter from Judge Buffington was real: I am alive, retired and living in Texas and yes I did author the letter sent to UP. There have been others sent to the Board of Directors, attorneys and US Senators and none of them have seemed to make a whit of difference. John Buffington
Oh brother. :embarassed: Actually Mark, you're not the only lawyer that is into trains. We have a lawyer here in Downeast Maine (also a retired judge) that has a huge layout. I've never seen it but we have a mutual friend that says it is impressive. Charlie
