    As a non-DCC user...

Do most DCC model rrer's change out the manufacturer supplied DCC boerd? I am in N scale, but would the same apply to other scales, too?

In other words, are manufacturer supplied DCC boards sub-standard?

By DCC boards, are you talking about the light boards that contain a DCC plug or are you talking about locomotives that come with a DCC decoder already installed?

I model in HO so most locomotives don't come with decoders. For the 2 locomotives I have purchased that did come with a decoder, I have left it in. It isn't that great of a decoder and I will probably replace it eventually. It doesn't have BEMF and the only functions it has are for the front and rear lights. No ditch light capability or gyrolites.

For locomotives that come with a light board, I typically replace the board and don't use the built in plug.

    Flash:

Atlas is the only manufacturer to date that puts decoders in some of their loco's. These decoders aren't substandard but have basic functions.

I buy loco's without decoders as I want to use the decoder of my choice in all loco's.

Most seasoned DCC users use the same approach.

Some DCC users will buy the loco with a factory installed decoder.

When I initially bought loco's with decoders at the beginning of my DCC adventure, those decoders were eventually replaced with the decoder of my choice.
