Are there any SP AC4400CW's repainted into UP colors? Ive been tracing most of them and some show as "Not in equipment register" can anyone confirm? Thanks for any response.
I believe they are almost all painted in UP colours.... I heard some one say there were around 5 SP painted units left, but i am not suer that was the AC44000CW he was talking about Happy Railroading! Dane
Very few SP C44ACs have been repainted. They will occupy the 6148-6424 number slot on the UP roster which is taken up with SD60Ms that need to be renumbered before more SP C44ACs are repainted. I see may SP C44ACs every day. They will still be around for awhile.
Scott, SP's 9800s are the SD70M's... C44-9W's are 8100's and AC4400CW's range from 100-378.. I was browsing Mtnwestrail.com and found a pic of a Repainted Ex SP AC4400 it is now UP 6895, So Im assuming the repaints are in the late 6800 class.
here is how it is: UP AC4400CWs: UP5700-6147--new, CTE models UP6148-6379--unknown from where, possibly from UP7080-7297 series. UP6380-6549--former SP100-271 UP6550-6699--delivered new to UP 3/97-8/97 UP6700-6702--former UP9997-9999 UP6703-6767--former CNW8801-8835, OLS units UP6738-6837--delivered new to UP 3/96-6/96 UP6838-6887--ordered by CNW, delivered to UP 10/95-11/95 UP6888-6994--former SP272-378 UP6995-6999--warranty units UP7000-7009--former GECX4000-4009 UP7080-7297--delivered new to UP 10/97-12/99 UP also has upgradable AC6044CWs, which have AC6000CW carbodies, but AC4400CW engines. These are: UP7010-7079--delivered new to UP 11/95-9/96 UP7300-7335--delivered new to UP 3/98-5/98 UP's AC6000CWs are 7500-7579. So far several SP AC4400CWs have been repainted to UP, but I think only about 1/4. Don't know of any patches.
Making a quick check of John Barnhill's NOR-CAL UP Connection, I found a few photos of some AC44's in the 6380-6549 series and can confirm that they are ex-SP units. The ex-SP AC44's have high mounted numberboards, while early UP and ex-CNW AC44's have nose mounted number boards. Of course, UP later received AC44's with high number boards and the new CTE units are also so equipped.
upfoamer1.. Actually the new C44ACCTE's are numbered 5700-5769, 70 units all together.. Just wanted to correct you.
The new AC4400CW-CTEs are currently filling UP numbers 5700-5769, but UP has plans to order more to fill all of the numbers up to 6147 with the CTEs. Please see the link. UP Roster
upfoamer1.. Thats not true, As of now they've only ordered 70.. #'s 5700-5769. Some of your stuff on your website is not correct, I do not wanna argue.. Im just tryin' to help out.
upfoamer1, Your info is incorrect about the numbering on SP C44ACs. They will be numbered in the 6148-6424 slot. You better recheck your info.
Well to me it seems that no matter what we do, there will always be a few inaccuracies in the UP roster. I don't think this will be fixed for another couple of years. Heck, I don't think UP knows what they've numbered where. I feature my own summary version of the roster on my site: UP All-time Roster Summary Not sure where I heard it, but did understand that the series from 5769 up to the current series would be filled in with new CTE units eventually Who knows with UP. Currently I don't show this on my version and will only add it after this is substantiated. Anyhow, Later... John Barnhill Nor-Cal SP/UP Connection

You better recheck your info.

Since there is a little disagreement going on, I did some further research and found out that everyone is at least partly right. The original 1997 UP renumbering plan slotted the ex-SP AC44's into the 6379-6549, 6888-6995 (excluding 6936) series. Most of the early repainted SP units were given numbers in this series when first repainted, so upfoamer is not totally mistaken. In the newest (2000) roster, the ex-SP AC44's have been assigned the 6148-6420 series. Currently, only one ex-SP unit is confirmed to be renumbered into this group. Interestingly enough, the most current roster does not even acknowlege the new AC44CTE's, so any guesses as to the total number to be ordered would be speculation. All of my information comes from Don Strack's UP Locomotive Information Page, which is probably the most solid information available about UP's roster. The truth is, tracking the roster of any large railroad is hardly an exact science. Just do the best you can and try not to get frustrated. [ 06 June 2001: Message edited by: Kevin Stevens ]
You know what, Kevin is right, UPfoamer1 my mistake I'm sorry I didn't mean to hurt your feeling at all.. my appologies
We still have quite a few SP AC4400Ws here in Grand Junction- for a while they were the only power on the coal trains off the North Fork District. Nowadays we see more AC6044Ws, C4400Ws, and SD9043s on coal trains as well. The normal power arrangement on the eastbound coal trains is 3 up front, 1 in the middle (sometimes 2) and 2 on the rear. The trains to & from the North Fork district run two on the head end only. GE power is the predominant road power on coal trains here.
