If you want to maintain a number in the prototypical range for that type of equipment then buy a number decal sheet, consult one of the web pages that deal with the road name and type of equipment you have, pick a number within the range and apply a new number. There are several products that will rub out existing painted-on numbers including Joe's Model Train Gel purchased on eBay under the N scale listings. Or you can add one number to the end of the existing one, or remove one number.
