Here is a real mechanical reefer in Selma, NC, Dec 2007. I thought mechanical reefers were all cryogenic now; no mechanical parts anymore? At least maybe the mechanical ones are rare.

Another. Is this one mechanical with an external unit?

This is new to me.
What is the nature of the mechanical vs cyrogenic?
Mechancial I am guessing is like a "normal" freezer on a larger scale. No idea about the cyrogenic.

Cryogenic may not be the exact term, but this webpage has information on the type of car I am referring to. Some are called arctic cars.

 

Thought I'd contribute a shot. Took this last year in W. NY on the "Water Level Route"

 

These were on a NB juice train where CSX crosses NS. Taken around 7:15PM last May.
