I was wondering if anyone has a source for a Red/White LED suitable for Z scale. I like this one described by the Australian NMRA, but it seems to be unavailable and I can't find a comparable unit. http://www.nmra.org.au/Hints/SML/SML.html Mark
for firebox flicker you might do better with orange white, as I have no knowledge or red white, the other option is to use two leds one above the other, but they have different ballast resistors so need separate leads, but take a look at ngineering dot com as they have lots of information on surface mount LEDs or SMD leds, I find 604 size suitable for Z headlights and ditch lights.
I used a yellow/red led in my Challenger. The red one is constant to represent glowing coals and the yellow flickers to represent flames. Looks great.
Guys, Thanks for the input. My application is almost exactly the example in the link I posted: combination back-up/tail light. Newbee's post isn't quite what I need (no wires), but it led me to a search that found Kingbright as the LED manufacturer with the units being available through a large U.S. electronics distributor. I agree about the firebox LEDs. Having recently ridden in an oil fired steam loco, I would go more toward yellow. For fire and other special lighting effects, I've been looking at the Blinkm: a small programmable module with an RGB LED. I can program it to produce a roaring fire that slowly burns down to red embers, searchlights, arc welding, etc. I would have used it in this project, except it really doesn't produce a good white light.
