My dad recently passed away and left me a box of O Gauge Lionel trains from the 1960s. The transformer in the box was red and said #4550, output 6 watts. I presume this is ok to use? Apologize if this is in the wrong forum, I am new. Thanks.

    Welcome to TrainBoard!!!!!!!

I too have my Dad's old set which is even older and I have ran it around the floor more then a few times. It was the set that got me started in the hobby.

Ok, great, but do you know anything about this type of Lionel Power Pack (#4550)?

    Always glad to help.

The one thing my Grand-Pa had me do with my Dad's old set was to place a hot-plate under the transformer if I was going to run the train alot as it did tend to get a bit warm the longer it was used.

If your trains are actually O gauge Lionel, from the 1960's, that is NOT the correct power supply. Note that this one as pictured specifies DC output to track. 1969 and earlier Lionel was AC to track.

Ken could be very right about that and looking closer at that eBay auction, the box shows it as being for an HO as model #5-4550. I'm still trying to search to see what more I can find on this model but not having much luck...

I grew up on post-war Lionel (O, O-27), and American Flyer S gauge. I'm a former collector of post war Lionel, 1945-1969. Past member TCA, TTOS.

My younger brother had Lionel HO. Which was the same power source as other HO at that time, DC.

What was the scenario after 1969? DC output to track for O?

Which one? Top or Bottom? It might more help Ken (more then me) help determine the age of the set as you might have a mixed bag of equipment.

The one (set) on the bottom, with the Green Tanker car. Is that newer than the 1960s? Again, why do you ask?

That should help use "date" your set. The "Top" one is my Dad's childhood set and the "Bottom" is my childhood set. Now if I can remember when I got my set or if Ken knows it off the top of his head.

Ken, I'm not home right now but I think my set is "Modern" (1970-1986) vs. my Dad's which is either Pre-War (1901-1941) or Post-War(1945-1969); likely early Post-War.

    Gornza-

Darren is trying to determine what you have, without having seen more than just that power supply. In order to know if it will actually be safe to use.

By chance do you have a digital camera, or access to one? If so, perhaps you could take a few pictures, and post them here?

Or, perhaps you could describe a few individual pieces- Such as a box car, it's lettering, color(s) and the number on it? Are there pieces in boxes? Those would have an item number on at least one end.

Still won't be able to get access to my set anytime soon; but, based on my collection database and if his Dad's set is the same as mine it would be the following "plastic" pieces.

    • NYC 0-4-0 Steam Engine #490 (Black)
    • Penn Gondola #347100 (Gray)
    • Cities Services Tanker CSOX#2532 (Green)
    • NYC Caboose #18326 (Red)
My set would either be very late 60's or early 70's which is why I'm thinking it might be 1970, right at the cusp of Post-War and Modern transition of Lionel.
