Thanks. I'd forgotten Springfield, never went through there. I was familiar with Pittsfield as a common NYC/NH station. Though never saw NH equipment as I went through on NYC Harlem trains, and later on B&A RDC's to North Adams, MA. I enjoy your northeast railroad photos. They're well done. I recognize many locations. Though, I'd appreciate if you would identify them. That would help my aging random access, write-only memory. Thanks.
Virtual Railfan has a camera at the Springfield station. Amtrak and commuter trains on the Hartford Line to New Haven depart and arrive to/from the right side of the picture. The Boston section of Amtrak's Lake Shore LTD passes through once a day in each direction. Freight trains appear at random intervals.
Living in a place devoid of rail traffic, I don't get to post much. But...this is my favorite thread on any railroad forum I am on, and I check it every day. So thank you to all who post! My wife and I are thinking about relocating to Alabama...so we went there for the week. I was so happy to see trains! Here are some photos I snapped. A couple of fresh gondolas, fresh tank cars, and some MW cars filled with ties. As they rolled by we could smell the creosote.
From 03/24/1979 at Barrington, IL, Bi-Level Coach No.1, first of sixteen in the initial order to St. Louis Car in 1955. Interestingly, they were equipped with steam heat to make them compatible with the steam locomotives still in suburban service at the time, but engineered to convert to HEP, which was done in 1963. The small window size was enlarged with future orders. Happily, this car has been preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum. From 10/20/1995 at Clifton Forge, WV is C&O 1658. It had previously served Amtrak, SCL and ACL before being repatriated and repainted as seen here. It's since been moved to Medina, OH where it sits inexplicably truckless and forgotton. It rests on the property of Medina Cut Stone.
Chessie's gotten over the heartbreak and is now in a rather foul mood about it: I tend to agree with her.
I've also seen this sad result with a heavyweight business car owned by a friend. It was quite livable inside, with friends and I often crashing there on weekends. Upon his passing, it was sold to someone with grand ideas and apparently not much more. I found photos of it years later at a new and desolate location, with every window smashed out and its sides covered in graffiti. Such a depressing sight; I'm not sure what became of it.
