@HemiAdda2d Sorry for the late reply. Your post got past me.
My loose understanding is that the original was about 100 years old. About 40 years ago it was reinforced, (I'll see if I can find older pics I took). You can see the 'extra' in an awkard position.
Ironically the double track stone arch, (viaduct?), bridge a quarter mile east of there, (inpound), stands strong.

Great! photos everyone. I'm going to have to return and reveiw them again.
    My contribution:

Moonlight on the Rails, um, well, I *think* it is the moon light. I'm going back tomorrow to confirm it.
My almost 12yo grandson was a masive help to me in the dark, (I'm night blind), in all ways including locating the moon. Yes, I admit it, I could not find it up there. Sigh. The last time I posted his pic he was about 5yo, licking a lollypop and watching an FP40 goi9ng past in the 'Arnold Arborehtum'. So, here is an update:

Is there a thread for 'Trains at Night'?
I have two vids that would be fitting.

I would guess it is a patch. Something probably not allowed these days.

That is the service access port to the dylithium steam crystal drive insyphonator.

Ah, yes... the ancestor of the dilithium chambers used in anti-matter powered starships.

I'd bet that 2-8-0 could hit Warp 1.5 with the right hogger gunning it.

(sorry, incorrigible compulsive Trekkie here... )

Dammit Jim, I'm a steam engineer, not a tribble.

Some of the C&NW Zito yellow locos ended up looking like that after a few years out on the road.

All of those rail joints in foreground have me thinking they were cut out of sections being welded into CWR. Is there a rail facility nearby?

I don't think there is a rail welding facility in the Lehigh Valley. I think there is still one in Steelton south of Harrisburg.

Perhaps they were purchased from a rail welding operation somewhere else in order to salvage the fish plates and bolts?

Did some hiking at Mt. Takao today. Some train pics from the flat portion of the trip:

    1) Behind the cab in an E203 series (taken out of service a couple of years ago, but back in service I guess while newer models are upgraded-lots of Japanese rail fans at each station watching us go by).

    2) through the cab window/last two photos is an HD300 locomotive waiting for its next job near the platform at Hajima station.

Some interesting details to see. There is a cage over the horn. Surely to prevent theft. Dynamics are plated over. The class lights area is completely smooth. And the number boards are covered over.

Would that be the equivalent of 'mothballing'?
