From April 1984 in Atlanta, GA. I think this was taken at the L&N's Tilford Yard, but I'm not certain. Tilford was opened in 1957 by the NC&StL as their Hills Park Yard. It's gone today.
Taken in January 1989 at NS's Inman Yard in Atlanta are paired MP-15DCs and former CofG SD-9s. Note the added "skybox" on the yard tower, and with hors d'oeuvres and refreshments tabled inside no doubt.
An interesting artifact in Atlanta's railroad history is MP 0 as set in place by the Western & Atlantic RR in the late 1830s to early 1840s as the starting point for their line to Chattanooga. A century and half later, the location had become surrounded by a parking garage and trash piles as seen here in a Kodachrome from 1984. In 2018 the MP was removed to a safe home in the Atlanta History Center.
Neat photo. I assume the oil is being transferred from truck and horse cart into the tank car, thanks to gravity.
Found at Cornelia, GA at locomotive rebuilder Johnson Railway Service in October 1985 was SOU E-8 6901 that routinely saw service on the Southern Crescent. After a stint with the New Georgia Railroad, the 6901 was presented to the Southeastern Railroad Museum in Duluth, GA. NS then rebuilt her and in 2019, she returned to the Museum's collection.
Three of 1218, the first two at Toccoa, GA in April 1988 and the third crossing the Chattahoochee River in Phenix City (yep, that's the way they spell it), AL in November 1989.
"Frac Sand West" Whose railroad is this, anyways? Frac sand labors upgrade out of Minot as a grain train waits at Soo Tower for lights. Just in case you wondered what trailed the UP unit, it was this blueberry:
As seen in 1992 and 1998, the Georgia Woodlands Railroad operates on a former Georgia Railroad branch. In the shot below, their former CWP&S SW-8 and former B&O GP-9 are nearing the end of the line at Washington, GA. Their "terminal" at Washington as seen in the lower shot is simplicity itself. Long ago, the Elberton & Eastern and the Washington & Lincolnton railroads connected at Washington.
From December 1992 at Lane, SC on the former ACL main, sentinels of railway safety protect the track ahead. This classic ACL signal bridge and its signals were recently removed in favor of PTC signaling.
