East Deerfield in western MA was the site of an important yard on the B&M. Most of these shots are from the summer of 1983 when Guilford had recently taken control and before they screwed it all up.
On the former NYNH&H mainline is South Norwalk, CT. I found the depot and two towers there, S.S. 44 (also known as BERK Tower) built in 1896 and its replacement WALK Tower. WALK was placed across from S.S. 44 adjacent to the branch to Danbury which diverges from the main here. WALK protects the main with a rather serious derail. Sometime after these slides were taken in 1988, the old tower was restored and is now a museum!
Allow me to fire up the wayback machine a bit to the early 2000s, back when I had no skills, a cheap camera and cool stuff to shoot... In 2003-4, I made my first trip to the Moffat Route, and the bug bit big time. Here's the now-gone Ski Train (now known as the Winter Park Express, running all Amtrak equipment), at MP 45 just east of Tolland, CO: In 2003, the back of the UP Cheyenne shops had this cool sand facility; fresh silver overspray was everywhere: The California Zephyr only detoured off the Moffat when there was a derailment, or some other service disruption west of Denver. Here, the CZ hustles thru Greeley, CO enroute to Cheyenne and a trip over Sherman Hill: I saw this on a freight car in Cheyenne; I'll just leave this here....
Whether current or from yesteryear, your images are always excellent Hemi. How can so many years have gone by so quickly?
Trying to drive over a bumpy railroad crossing while taking a photo of a train heading away. Oh well........
Ridgewood, NJ sported both a nice depot and an interlocking tower (WJ Tower) in July 1982. I don't see the tower on Internet maps, so it's likely been demolished. The depot is still there and remains a busy stop for New Jersey Transit communters.
From June of 1982 are these miscellaneous shots taken on the Cape Cod Railroad in the Hyannis, MA area. Not wanting to carry my good camera and film through airport inspections and X-ray machines, I settled for a lousy little travel camera. I can't find much of anything about the RS-1. The S-4 is ex-D&H and was scrapped in 1996. I like the GN-inspired paint on the F!
Always on the hunt for interlocking towers, I was very happy to find the Bay Colony Railroad's former NYNH&H tower at Buzzards Bay, MA. Also shown is the mighty railroad lift bridge over the Cape Cod Canal, which remains the second longest vertical lift bridge in the U.S..
Wide-spaced ties, dirt for ballast--either this is really old (pre-1930s) or this is a shortline operation.
Truss rod wooden cars with large numbers on the left indicate a fairly early timeframe. I would guess 1880's....But I can't read the roadname.
From June 1981, GG-1 4877 looks splendid in her new PRR Tuscan Red finery at Woodbridge, NJ. Friends and I had gone there to check out WOOD Tower, having no idea that the 4877 was en route. You can imagine our euphoria as she approached with a New York & Long Branch commuter train. The Jersey Central Railway Historical Society and NJ Transit combined efforts to paint the 4877. The locomotive has since been cosmetically restored in Brunswick Green and resides at the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey's yard in Boonton, NJ.
