What is the condition of this operation? I have a feeling it much less than before it was swallowed and then spit out again?

Amazing that those Paducah types are still making a living...

I think it's the same idea behind the F/45, FP/45 that EMD had, and the GE passenger unit as well,(U33CG?, I think?), that it's easier to maintain in bad weather versus normal locos, being out on a walkway in all sorts of weather.

The cowl type body is like Kurt said - better access to the internals in any weather.

The cab design is for a better view of the track nearest the engine. These babies usually hang around with work crews and it's always better to have a good view of anyone potentially in the way. It would make for a very bad day.

If you are going to have a flag waving in the breeze, might as well collect some of that wind energy as well.

This train was westbound heading up Beaumont Hill just west of Palm Springs in 2013. Thought the wind turbines in the area were really neat. Wish I had been able to spend more time there. Maybe next time I'm out that way........

Love the foggy shot, but the Rock Island-themed IAIS scheme is the coolest part of the shot.

The fog shot is cool but I almost think I like the tunnel shot just a tad better. Probably can't go wrong either way.

Yeah, it does look a little out of this world...

At the Railroad Museum of Minot is an unusual single seat NP speeder.

A single seat speeder. My great grandfather used to ride the ones you had to pedal along the track. Two wheels on one rail, one on the other.
