Google Earth allows you to locate stuff on the satellite image, and save that location in a file (a .kmz file). I'm thinking that we can as a group build a single railroad mapping file where everyone inputs their favorite yard, railroad facility, railfanning site or place of interest. At some point we could have a pretty good satellite map of all the major RR facilities in the US and whereever else. I've already started to put in some yards and facilities in my area (SoCal), and I'd be glad to upload it somewhere (??) for others to access. Anyone interested in doing this??
Sounds cool, we could even Group them by RR (if Known), possible routes (ex. San Diego to Denver), States, Dates , Ect.
mccabejc: I'm interested. I'd love to include satellite images of the (former)Peoria and Pekin Union Ry (presently the Tazewell and Peoria RR). The P&PU (TZPR) straddles the Illinois River at Peoria, Illinois. The Eastern Division starts with the main yard in East Peoria, Illinois, and extends south 10 miles to Pekin, Illinois. Across the P&PU (TZPR) bridge, the Western Division extends from Peoria south 10 miles through Bartonville, Illinois. In the 1970s, there were yards and interchanges for BN, RI, CNW, TPW, NW, ITC, CR, PRR, P&E, PT, GM&O, ATSF, IC, and CIM. Google Earth images of the past few years will still show tracks for UP, BNSF, NS, IAIS, TPW, TZPR (G&W), and IM (also G&W). Where would you put such a file for easy TBer access? Perhaps a website reached through a RailSeek Link?
