I am new to railfanning, and live in the Las Vegas area. Is there a way to find out schedules of freight trains prior to their blasting through town? Also I would like to purchase a railroad atlas. Do these show every track and spur? Which is your favorite? Thank you, Pete

    Pete,
Welcome to trainboard its always a pleasure when new members post.
I dont have the all information you are after but i'm sure one of the mebers here will be ablt to help you.

As for a railroad atlas if you are after UP maps you can go to the official UP site and find maps.

    Try this site

I was in Vegas last Septemeber (got married) and my bride was hoping for a view of The Strip - we didn't get one - but we did have a view of the UP main line :D and It seemed that a stack train went by every time I looked out the window.

A current (or recent) timetable will show you how the UP handles trains through Vegas but it won't have a schedule. Most modern frieght trains are run as extras.

The serious railfans uses radio scaners to listen in on the railraod comunication to find out about when a train will come.

Pete, Welcome aboard! In response to your question about a railroad Atlas that has every spur, there is indeed one and here is the info to get one from the publisher, IF you can't get one from your local Hobby Shop

    Title-RAILROAD ATLAS of North America
    Author-Mike Walker
    Publisher-Steam Powered Group

There are published out of England, but they are very very helpful.

You will want the California/Nevada region volume but they do have other regions (I use the Pacific NW Region and it is very insiteful. If you need any more information you van email me or look them up at www.spv.co.uk or E-mail them at sales@spv.co.uk Good Luck [IMG]
