Excellent photos Darren, I remember riding on the D&RGW back in the 1930's. BoxcabE50, Where most steam whistles were an alto range, (The Big Boys were more of a bass moan), the "Mountain Wild Cat" steam whistles were a soprano high pitched SCREAM sort of like the English steam whistles sounded like. It was found that the Wild Cat whistle pitch would carry sound farther down the canyons than a standard whistle. They scared cattle, deer, elk, workers, tourists and bear, off the tracks in time to prevent being run over. They were developed back in the days when mountain right of way had many tight curves, cuts, tunnels, and bridges, and when going down grade with the engine more or less idling to hold a train back, it could be on top of you like an interurban, before you would hear it coming! Believe me, if you ever heard one Wild Cat blow, and you were near some tracks, you got your self well away from there in a hurry! The first time I heard one was when my Dad and I had walked up grade a ways to watch one coming down into Raton, NM. We were beside the track and saw him starting to approach around a curve ahead, so we moved a little farther back from the rails. When he got about 300 yards from us he gave a loud blast, my heart stopped and I wet my pants! It was my first time to the mountains back about 1934, when I was three, but I still remember it like yesterday. I'll be back in a minute, I think I got to go change my shorts!
