Where's the good spots to visit? The old BN's Northtown yard, some Missabe action? Maybe the LTV F units? How to find, and where to go? I'm asking on the behalf of Alaska GP49, who's planning a visit... Mike, feel free to clarify if I missed anything!
Hemi, if you can unearth a copy of the July 2004 Railfan and Railroad mag, it has quite a spread on railfanning the twin cities. It came in handy when I went back there last fall. Of course for us steam nuts, a not to be missed item is the 261 shop at Minneapolis Junction. St. Paul Union Depot (SPUD) area, the Minnesota Railroad museum. Let's hear from the Minn. crowd.
Any photos of their facilities? All I've ever seen, is a video of the restoration in a GE shop. Is this the same site? Boxcab E50
Ken, no, I think this facility was a former diesel maintenance shop at Minneapolis Jct. Harrison Ave. if I remember right. Steve Sandberg convinced whoever owned it that it could serve a useful purpose and he is doing just that. This shot is the north end of the building. There is a run-through track. Yard adjacent.
I wonder if that's an old GN/BN facility? Anyhow, it's good to know there's decent roof over her head. Or should I say stack? Boxcab E50
Thanks Jermey for starting a thread for me. My dad and I head to MN the 17th. We are planning on spending most of our time in the Duluth area chasing the DMIR. We are wondering where the best places for photo opts are and any other railfanning oportunities that you may recommend. Thanks for your help.
If you haven't checked out the Lake Superior Railroad Museum & the North Shore Scenic Railroad before, my family enjoyed it a few years ago. Here is their web site. http://www.lsrm.org/ That was the only train related activity we alloted, rest of the time went to the Walleye.
No problem! Looking forward to some Moffat Route action this weekend. Hopefully you can get some good info here. I have a Railfan & Railroad mag that features the LTV F's, want it? I can bring it friday, if I remember.
