I have a friend headin out to Oklahoma and wants to know if there is anything within a short distance of the freeway that he can railfan. Be it displays, museums or shortlines. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Tell him to get off I-40 at Clinton, OK and head into town- Farmrail has its headquarters there, and has a nice arrangement of motive power (chopnosed Geeps). The former Frisco and Santa Fe lines parallel each other north & south, while the former Rock Island runs east-west. PS- the Frisco line goes from Enid thru Clinton down to Snyder, and is operated as subsidiary Grainbelt. In Okie City, you have the BNSF yard south of town, plus it's the northernmost stop for Amtrak's 821/822, the Heartland Flyer, which runs as a connector to the Texas Eagle between OKC and Ft. Worth via the former Santa Fe main. Also, check out the Watco website- the Stillwater Central operates the former Frisco from Sapulua to OKC on an as-needed basis, but you should be able to find some SLWC power there. They also run the ex-Frisco southwest of OKC to Quanah, TX. For more info, have him contact Terry LaFrance - I'll send you his email addy via private message. He's an Okie resident, Frisco modeler, and moderator of the Yahoo! group Sooner State Rails. Tell 'im Bob T. down in Sherman, TX sent ya. HTH
