I believe that Mike counted twelve during our trip. We followed the string of engines to Glenwood Springs, CO where they were tied down. Does that sound like the right number Mike? Thanks for choosing one of mine Buddy! Ben
They usually transfer power from Denver (North Yard or Burnham shops) to Grand Junction for balancing. I counted 12 units. Sounds like a midtrain helper on Tennessee Pass in the early 80's on a DEGX coal load (train #790, http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=280366&nseq=8). They sent 100-car trains of coal up the hill with up to 20 units leading, midtrain and pushing. What a show that must have been.
Thanks for choosing mine, but really, given the subject matter, I didn't have to do much to take good pictures.
I think that Pastoolio's power transfer is neat. I saw only one similar power transfer on CSX during the 16 years that I lived next to the ex-L&N M&NO (Mobile & New Orleans) tracks. It also was a mixed bag of twelve styles, axles, and years, so maybe twelve is some sort of magic number. However what was surprising was that this mess of power was towing one (1) grundgy box car. OK, so the boxcar had a FRED, but why not insert the car into a real freight train that was heading to New Orleans?
Thanks Buddy for picking mine, this was an interesting move to watch. the train came from the bridge above. Curtis
Was that shot from near the 6th street underpass? Is the bridge the approach to the Ohio River bridge there?
