Yes, another great mix of photography. This is one of my very favorite parts of this forum. Makes me want to travel!
Where the Amtrak train pic has been taken? Looks like Cameron, Tehachapi Pass but normally this road is freight only, am I wrong? And what's the reason for the BNSF Dash9 at the point, ahead of of dedicated Amtrak units? Dom
The Amtrak photo was of the Southwest Chief on the BNSF in eastern California approaching Ash Hill. The number 2 Amtrak locomotive had died on the day before in New Mexico while climbing Glorieta Pass. The BNSF locomotive was added in Albuquerque to provide extra traction. The train still lost time because normally they are allowed to go 90MPH on much of the BNSF trans con across northern New Mexico and Arizona. The BNSF freight locomotive was only good for 75MPH.
Depends upon the situation. If on non-Amtak/passenger tracks, it could be used as a pilot unit. Could be due to train being underpowered. Could be an Amtrak unit had failed.
