    Hi,

Just a note to let you that an eastbound freight on the CSX (exC&O) line from Cincy to Huntington (and beyond) struck and killed a mother and daughter on Sunday, the 13th of April. They were walking across the tracks and apparently didn't hear the whistle or notice the crossing signals. It's so sad for the families that lost their loved ones.

It's also very sad for the Engineer and Conductor of the train. They saw what was going to happen and knew there was NO WAY they could stop in time.

As if any of us need any warning........ TRAINS CANNOT STOP ON A DIME. Always be aware and alert.

The accident occured in Dayton, KY, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. Dayton is just east of Newport, KY.

Ed. I can't really have pity for them. They probably were not paying any attention to the gates, lights, and bells. You wonder what they were talking about that could deter their attention that way.

I have to agree with Telegrapher. How is it possible not to hear a train whistle. The closest railroad crossing from my house is at least 3 miles away and I can hear trains all the time... Then they always blame the train crews...

Yeah and what about the electric bells on the crossings? Stopped vehicles? I mean it is only a matter of a few seconds (30 maybe) before a train crosses a crossing from the time lights start flashing.

I agree with all of you.... how could someone NOT see or hear the train and/or the signals. The street crossing has gates as well as the normal signals. A co-worker of mine lives one street east of the street where the accident happened. He says that the trains whistle long and loud through town.
My question: Is this a possible suicide? It's not out of the question.
Either way... suicide or not.... it's terribly sad for the family members left behind and for the crew members on the train.
    Regards,
    Ed
