Throughout the world there are a number of interesting, often narrow gauge, railways which rely on 'Rack and Pinion' or 'Cog' systems of traction. I find these railways particularly interesting and have created this thread to allow their details to be recorded in one place on this forum.

    Rochers-de-Naye

My wife and I had a holiday in Switzerland (2004), in the Bernese Oberland, and travelled on a number of Rack Railways. On the way there, we travelled via Montreux and as a result had chance to ride on the Rochers-de-Naye Line from Montreux ..........

    The Brienz-Rothorn Bahn, Switzerland

My wife and I also travelled this line in 2004. The views were spectacular and the weather was in our favour! My camera, in those days, was not able to produce high resolution photos. But these give a very good impression of the line and the views from the top. The first image is a map of the line.

All of the above railways are operational at present. This next post relates to a Rack Railway which is long-gone. ...

Monte Carlo (Monaco) to La Turbie in the South of France

Then line opened on 10th February 1894. Traffic grew steadily until 1920. Electrification projects were envisaged in 1926 and 1929 but they did not come to fruition and the line closed in 1932. .........

I see a wrecked steam engine in the pictures for this line. It has me wondering if the incident was simply a derailment, or possibly a descending train which lost control.

It is definitely a train running down from La Turbie into Monaco. Whether out control or a derailment I don't know.
