Does anyone have info regarding the NS line that runs east of Louisville...I was there last Friday, set up to photograph a train on the Pope Lick trestle off of Taylorsville Rd - and I waited, and waited, and waited. The signal to the east of the bridge showed a green aspect for westbound, but nothing came for over 2 hours.

What is the train frequency on this line? And do the signals stay green when there is no traffic? We had driven in from the east, and were stopped by an eastbound stack train at the grade crossing just off the I-64 exit heading toward the trestle, so things appeared to be moving, at least before we got there.

Thanks in advance for any info. OBTW, the trestle is awesome....

You were at an intermediate... they will show clear (green) on both sides if no train is coming (unless it happens to be the intermediate before a control point... in which case it will show approach (yellow) on one side and clear on the other).

The former Southern to Louisville sees at least three stack trains, 23G east, T61 local west. Autorack traffic mainly goes out of Shelbyville... east of where you were (25N to Shelbyville... 23G west). There's also a 285 east...

That line can run 8 - 10 trains in daylight.
Signals stay lit 24 hours so green doesn't mean anythings coming. This line is A B S and trains move from point to point upon verbal orders from a dispatcher only.
Frequencys are channel 1, 160.950 train to train and, channel 2, 161.245 dispatcher to train, and 160.830 train to dispatcher. Everyone stays on channel one except to get orders from the dispatcher.

Also the only places that are CTC are:

    Tatem, IN to Dumesnil, Ky
CTC island at Manetta(Mixing Center lead)
West Talmage to South Wye(Jct with North Wye and SJ Tower).

There are future plans to make this line all CTC, but right now I do not know when that will happen.

I can tell you this, the longest siding on the Louisville Dst is Waddy.
Here are the rest of the ABS sidings:
    Tucker, Joyes, Waddy, Coal Chute

The line runs 20/day sometimes up to 25.
    Some of the symbols are--
    General merchandise: 111, 112, 160, 161, 167, 375, 376
    Stack: 223, 224 22a*, 23g, 24n(2X month)
    Grain: varies
    Rack: 283, 284, 285, 287*, 294
    Steel: 60a, 61a
    Local: T19, T22, T79**

*extras run on an "as needed" basis
**Autorack run from CSX's Osbourn Yard to Ford Mixing Center at Shelbyville. Makes turn at CP Floyd.

I thought Dumesnil was still track warrant territory?
Just for clarification: Manetta is the mixing center just west of Shelbyville. Sidings are at; Tucker - Jeffersontown, Joyes - Simpsonville, Waddy - Waddy, Coal Chute - Lawrenceburg, Talmage - Harrodsburg.

Track Warrant territory begins at Dumesnil as CTC ends. Then West Talmage picks up the CTC all the way to South Wye/SJ Tower area.

I also know that Manetta is the Mixing Center lead and it is a CTC "island", the only one on the Louisville Dst. It has been in service since late 90's.

The sidings are designated on the radio as West Tucker/East Tucker, West Joyes/East Joyes, West Waddy/East Waddy, West Coal Chute/East Coal Chute, West Talmage/East Talmage. The only one that I know of that does not have a east/west name is Dumesnil and Prestonia. Prestonia is on the west-end and Dumesnil is on the east end where the CTC ends and TWC begins.

The North Wye is the northern leg of the wye and SJ Tower is the southern leg of the wye and both do have crossovers. Occasionally they will turn power there via the wye and they would talk with both the NorthEnd Dsp and LS Dsp. The LS Dsp has rights from South Wye to Tatem. The NorthEnd Dsp has rights from CP South Wye to SJ Tower and North Wye.
