Sorry for the newbie question, but what is the difference between a 4-4-2 sleeper and a 10-6 sleeper, and what do these numbers mean. How do you tell the difference between them just by looking at them?? Thanks
That is kind of a code that the railroads and Pullman used to describe the different accomodations on a sleeping car. A 4-4-2 ment that it had four compartments, four bedrooms and two drawing rooms. I believe a compartment was larger than a bedroom and the drawing room was the largest and had more births. A 10-6 had ten roomettes and six bedrooms. Many times there was a folding wall between ajoining rooms that could be hidden away to make two bedrooms into a larger compartment. It is just one of those things you have to look up somewhere if you want to be able to tell them apart. If the car has an interior that you can see, you can sometimes figgure it out.
To add to Russ's comments also the window arrangements differed because of upper and lower berth compartments, etc. Try a search on the web for your road and there should be some car photos available.
