My magnifier / lamp has developed a quirk. (for lack of a better word) Wondering if any of you could provide insight.
The knob (Red Arrow) where you can supposedly adjust height and angle, no longer works very well.

At the strangest of times after I've got it RIGHT where I want it, the dang arm will attempt to STRAIGHTEN(!), often, suddenly, in the direction of the Green arrow(!).

This can be quite startling (to say the least), and or Heartbreaking as this thing is heavy enough to sweep the workbench of whatever I happen to be working on at the time.

Do you think if I added some lockwashers or similar to the tightening assmbly it might stop the sudden re-adjustment?

Also the nub(?) that sticks out of the bottom of the box (blue arrow) that slots into a bracket that holds the thing to my bench is bent. The box that the thing comes out of is metal as is the nub itself. I'd like to fix that as well. But it is not as important as fixing the sudden forward motion.

Sorry if I posted in the wrong area but wasn't sure where to put this one....

    Tom:

Can that assembly be tightened manually? I don't see why not.

You can use washers to fill in the slack space.

This might be more suited for the Inspection Pit, but I'll leave it here for awhile to see what response you get, since it pertains to all scales.

Stay cool and run steam.... [IMG]

    Tom:

I'm guessing that the red arrow knob screwed into a nut that was seated in a square hole, and that the square hole became round over time, so that the nut turns when you tighten the knob. These things are made of mild steel, and that's what happened to mine. I just chucked it and bought another for about $10 (the mechanism, not the magnifier).
