Thought you might like to know that the Badger Creek Lumber Company has just been published on Trains.com. the address is http://www.trains.com/Content/Dynamic/Articles/000/000/001/051cnver.asp Tom Chmielewski Associate Editor of Trains.com got in touch with me a few weeks ago to write an article plus photo's on how I started in American modelling as I live in the UK.So I did, and here it is.
Hey Paul thinking about it, I got a favor to ask if you can. You have Shays, Heislers, and Climaxes on your layout. I wouldn't mind having you e-mail me a picture of each of the 3 including your doodlebug. I do have a question on the Heislers though, are they the Rivarossi ones??? Well I should say AHM/Rivarossi. Don't get me wrong I love the Articulateds, and true Mallets, but thats as far as rod loco's go. I also love the geared ones simply because they're different. The Shay has to be my favorite of all the geared loco's, but I got this itch for a Heisler too. I've never seen a HO scale Heisler run up close and personal like within arms reach. Anyway what I have been wondering about them is the drive train from the cylinders on the model does it actually work??? I mean like the Shays does??? All the movement and all. I'm seriously thinking of looking for a Heisler, hopefully a 3 truck, but if nothing else i'll take a 2 truck and be happy.
Nice work Paul, glad I have had the opportunity to meet you through the trainsboard. I suspect if you approached MR they would be interested in your layout as well. Your story is different enough that I think they would move on it. Also the quality of your photography is excellent enough so that no cross Atlantic is required of a photographer to get the shots for the magazine. I know you have had your layout in another magazine over here, I think Model Railroading but don't hold me to that. Good job. Have you had much recognition in England and publications over in your part of the country?
Paul, Congratulations on having an article published about you and your modelling. I am really looking forward to seeing your new layout as it progresses

I think Model Railroader is affiliated with trains.com so I suspect there just might be an MR feature in the future. Paul, any comments?
Hi Gang, and thanks to all, John, I will e-mail all three for you including the hacked about doodlebug. I have a 2 truck heisler for sale if interested, and they do work like the shay from the center. Also run very very well indeed.------------------- rsn48, Yes, it was Model railroading Aug/sept 2000, Over here in the UK I have had publications in Continental Modeller, Model Railways, and the NMRA roundhouse. ---------------------------- Rob, As trains.com is part of Kalmbach they might not publish due to it being in Model Railroading first. I did have an email from Jim Kelly saying he had seen my website, and next time I make a change to it to "let me have first crack" were his words. Anyway, part of it is now under the hammer. Cheers all, and thanks again.
Over here layouts appear in different mags, so just because one has done it, doesn't mean it won't appear in another. If that were the case, there wouldn't be any layouts left for mags to carry. For example, an N scale layout can appear in N Scale, MR, and RMC. An HO example, my son and I have followed is the "Utah Belt" with Erick Braumann. He has been in a couple of MR's but also RMC. The mags would be shooting themselves in the foot if they excluded based on publication in another mag. If that happened to me, I would be expected to be compensated for such "exclusivity."

It was actually really interesting because MR's take was very different from RMJ's take on the layout. [ 10 May 2001: Message edited by: yankinoz ]
Paul: Are you SURE you've never been to the US? The pics of your layout say otherwise. You musta done a lot of research, and it paid off in spades. I know you're rebuilding the layout, so I know I can't wait to see how it's gonna look when you're done.
Hi Bob, Never ever been to the USA, would love to someday as my Daughter lives in Orlando with my three grandchildren. Can't afford to go over.(at 65 On a pension) ------------------------------ Most of the hard work of taking down part of the Badger Creek has now been done. I have taken photo's from the start of the de-construction and will continue to photo each part as I go along. Show some soon. cheers Paul
This may sound like a silly question, but why have you dismantled the Beaver Creek? Or did you just get to the point where it was time to start over? I guess dismantling & rebuilding are part of the cycle- God knows my layout's been redone several times, in four homes in three states. Good luck with the rebuild!
Hi Bob, Not all of Badger Creek has come down, only part of it for a re-build, I just got the urge to have a go again. Better than taking it all down and starting again. I have taken photo's of the dismantle, and of the re-build, so will post something later on. thanks. Paul
