Do you have to insulate both rails on the program track ?
Or can a single insulated common rail version be used as program track ?

    Hi Paul

On my Digitrax set up, I believe you need a completely isolated, both rail break gap between the layout and the programming track..

On my set up, the programming track was a seperate yard length of track by the control units.. it wasn't even part of the layout.

    Regards

I think Graham is correct.... the programming track must be completely isolated from the rails.

I know my Digitrax Super Chief has 2 separate outputs for the progamming track and 2 for the rails.

Yes it has to be isolated electrically from the rest of the layout. I have seen some people use a stub-ended siding with a DPDT center-off switch so they can run it as normal for operations, then flip it to program.

    Thanks all.
I am about to lay my yard track and the program track will be a sort of MOW track with one or two Mow cars (unpowered)and room enough for a diesel to enter, this way it will be a camouflaged programm track.
    Double isolated it will be.

    Paul,
Good plan.... I have seen a lot of layouts that had programming tracks set up as sidings or even abandoned track. Again, it can be in the forefront as a siding, etc. as long as it is electrically isolated.
