Looks like the Building America scheme is here to stay. Look for it on an SD70M (or SP repaint) near you.

OMAHA, Nov. 14, 2001 – Union Pacific Corporation (NYSE:UNP) today formally unveiled a new paint scheme for its over-the-road locomotive fleet. Both sides of this series of locomotives feature a large image of the American Flag across the middle of the locomotive. The image of the flag is set against the famous Union Pacific "Armour" yellow background that has been the dominant color of the company's rail equipment since 1934.

Dick Davidson, chairman and chief executive officer of Union Pacific, said "Many of our employees have urged us to add the image of an American Flag to our locomotives in the weeks since the tragedy of September 11. These men and women play an important role in keeping our country strong and we are delighted to be able to honor this request."

The first three units, which were built by the EMD division of General Motors, will enter service today. The company said that the new image would be applied to all new locomotives as they enter service and that the image will be added to units currently operating during the next year. Union Pacific has more than 7,000 locomotives in service with approximately 6,400 in over-the-road use.

Two of the new locomotives will be used on a rail inspection trip that will go from Kansas City to Los Angeles and on to Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah. A timetable for the trip is posted on the railroad's Web site.
