Bob, I guess we can't really complain about the Depot shop in lantana not wanting to discount those two Shays anymore. It looks like list price is a discount! Nelson: We'd better run down there and buy those two remaining Shay's. When do you want to go? I remember buying three Shays at Trainworld for "124.95. I have five on the JJJ&E. Stay cool and run steam.....
I bought 2 shays for $130 each and decided to get rid of one one E-bay, it went for $157. Not bad considering I did nothing to this locomotive except buy it and sell it. I would of been very happy with $250 though.
Sometimes you just have to pull the trigger... Stay cool and run steam..... </font>[/QUOTE]well, no real ownership regrets. I decided then I did not want one. IMO, too small to appreciate the shay in N scale and I heard they do not pull well. but who would of guessed they would go for so much on ebay. I think the 40% off of MSRP coupon was worth it more for the ConCor Pioneer Zephyr I purchased instead.
Kozmo: I don't expect the Shay to pull many cars. The one's I have can pull 10 log cars up a 2% grade. I can live with that. I have Shays in N scale and HO scale and the N scale version is just as intriguing to watch although not all the gears are operational. I never expected a Shay to be made in N scale and Atlas did a remarkable job with the loco, considering all the engineering and mechanics involved in it's production. It supply and demand on EBay. I passed on this loco because I didn't have a suitable branch line. Now it looks like I should have found space for that branch line! Oh well, you just miss on some of them. I wondering if Atlas will re-release them, or if they were too much trouble.
Most the people I have talked to said they are nice little engines. but prototpicially they would be able to pull lots of log cars up steep grades and tight turns. They say tight turns are hard for it and can damage the Atlas drivetrain, and steep grades with more than a few cars and it is going no where. is this not true? I have not tried one myself - relying on experience of others. Since my logging train will need to climb some very steep grades and handle tight turns, I passed. I might have to kitbash something(s) for this. btw, they still have some of these at MSRP at the LHS if anyone is interested I can email you the LHS info. cheaper than ebay. There are several hobbyshops that still have the Atlas Shays at MSRP of $199. In Florida The Depot in Lantana has a Undecorated and another named road On sale for $199. Stay cool and run steam....
these say $179.99. the store always sells MSRP. might that mean they may be a 1st run left over? [ February 04, 2006, 01:14 AM: Message edited by: Kozmo ]
Atlas confirmed on their board that there will be another run of Shays sometime in the future but wouldn't commit to a date. They had stated that there were some design changes that they would impliment for the next run to improve them more but wouldn't say what.
I had heard that the later run (undecorated & sugar pine) had some improvements. no idea what or if true
Bruce: The Undecorated and Suger Pine units corrected some of the problems found in the first run. All mine are from the first run, and they run very well. Stay cool and run steam..... [ February 05, 2006, 09:59 AM: Message edited by: Powersteamguy1790 ]
