NS has set aside a maintenance window for the reconstruction of the Portage Bridge at Portageville, NY this summer. No word as to exactly what will be done or how as yet. This bridge spans avery deep gorge over the Genesee River on the former EL Southern Tier Line.

Is that the bridge where there was double track to the bridge on both sides and single track over the bridge? It was an automatic interlocking with power switches on both sides and the first train on the approach got the route.

Yes, that was quite a few years ago, but that is the same bridge. Double track has been gone for quite a while on both sides...

I would guess that most of the double track between Binghamton and Port Jervis is gone now. I was an FRA Insp in the mid 70s when they started to take it out before it became CR.
NY made them put some back in if my memory is correct. Never thought too highly of those copperheads down through there either.

Does anyone have a picture of the bridge they can post?

As far as the double track goes, Conrail never did get rid of all of it. I guess the plan was to make it all into controlled sidings, but it never happened. East of CP WAVERLY there are several sections of double track (NORAC Rule 251) territory with spring switches at each end. These survive to the present.
