I was reading the post about Athearns intentions in N scale and it says that they will be releasing all that went well in HO in N. What diesel locomotive releases would you say went the best sales wise, recent or other wise. From the look of those new standard cab SD70's, I think we N scalers are in for a treat. Thanks for any help guys~
Well Craig, their staple I'd say is the SD40-2 (unless you are looking for F units), but that's already out. They'd be looking for something new. Genesis units have been released, Dash 8s and 9s, so next step for them logically would be the non-ac SD70 series or the AC4400s. For steam we could see another Mikado or Pacific from them in N, but I would be willing to bet the SD70 is their next release.
Athearn has just purchased the whole of the Rail Power Products line so I would be looking to see some of those shells turned into Athearn releases the near future. It would be very easy to come out with a scale hood GP35 and an SD60 but I wonder if they want to compeate as a lower cost alternative to Kato and Life Like? There is lots of speculation out there on what's next for Athearn - the driving force behing the Genesis line is no longer working for Athearn so we will see....
So they purchased the RPP line? Well now, in HO I'd love to see SD45s and CF7s (round and Topeka-cab roof) with CORRECT hood width. In N scale, CF7s would also be a welcome addition. And yes, I'd love to see an Athearn scale-width-hood GP35 on the market in HO- the Katos are a wee bit expensive, and the Bachmann Pluses lack somewhat in detail. My two cents' worth...... [ 07. I just read the official press release (it's on trains.com) and Athearn does plan to release the first locomotive based on the RPP shells next year - along with a new drive line. The speculation is this will be in the Ready to Roll line and not Genesis. With the new one piece molded hand rails this really is going to be great for the hobby. They are also going to be releasing the 56' well car and some of the RPP trailers. Back to the original question - for me, Athearn has two of the three 'staples' for my early 90's Soo Line - GP38-2, SD40-2 and now we may see the third, SD60.
