What have you guys had better success with? I am painting E7 set 6000 for Golden State service. These will go to match my Rock Island M-50 4-8-2 once done.
As far as workability? Either perform well, although I think Polly Scale is a little more forgiving. Advantages of Modelflex: Pre-thinned, ready to go and has a nice glossy finish to decal with. Disadvantages: Easier to get orange peel if you spray at to high a PSI. For Modelflex I recommend you stir the paint, use a #3 needle in your airbrush and spray no higher than 20 PSI. Any higher and you will get a rough finish. Polly Scale: I find it flows slightly better and settles well for an acrylic. Disadvantages: Must thin and either add a gloss medium to it or spray apply a gloss coat over the model before decaling. For Polly Scale: Mix 75% paint to 25% thinner (don't use alcohol) and spray at 16-18 PSI with a #3 needle. Use Testor or Model Master Thinner as it has a reducer in it and helps with flow. Polly Scale used to have their own thinner, but from what I can tell, the Geniuses at Testor discontinued it even though it was a better product than Testors. Hope that helps. As far as what brands color best matches what you are modeling, I tend find colors subjective to many conditions so that is a decision you must make and later justify should you be called out on said decision.
Wow thanks Jim. That is exactly what I wanted to hear. I've only had experience with the Badger stuff, but the Polly Scale looks to have the right Aluminum to use.
Your welcome! Anything to help a fellow painter. Just remember to stir the Aluminum, don't shake it, otherwise you'll get a splotchy paint job. Here is a thread I did on painting with Polly Scale http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/entry.php?340-Modeling-CB-amp-Q-GP30-974-step-by-step it is from my blog and may help you on painting with Polly Scale.
