Here's a low-res to start off. I will have better ones later. Grand Canyon 4960 and ATSF 3751 double header.
Cool Fitz! I can't wait to get out there myself. I also can't wait to see some more! Russ Hoffman Valley RR
Here's a double header with 3751 and 4960. Headed north to the Canyon on Saturday. Then there is my grandson's shot of the 3751, 4960 and 18 at the Canyon station. He's 10 years old. Do you think he might be a foamer, if............. And mine of that lineup. These guys did a super job for railfans. That's El Tovar and the Grand Canyon RR depot. Don't you wish you had been there?
damn fitz those are some awesome shots , i wish i could have stayed for sat , but was already flying back , got all 25 rolls back , and got some great shots and some good video, please post some more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gordon, here's a shot that at least 500 other people got, all lined up on the highway at Drake, AZ. Hell's Canyon. Shot by my Grandson Austin, age 10, future foamer.
Now I am really envious! Those are beautiful shots. I love the 3751 it is a big beautiful machine Good start by the young railfan
Great shots Jim...looko\ing forward to seeing more steam....heard there was a triple header run on the rim....any thruth?...that would be awsome..... Now the X4449 will be heading North on Tuesday morning from the Oregon State Fair so we will get a little steam too.....
Michael, there wasn't a triple-header at the canyon rim, but that's where they lined all three engines up for that great photo op. Here's how it went on Saturday: The 4960 left light before the 3751 and positioned somewhere north on the main. The 3751 pulled the special north and made a couple of runbys. After the second runby, she disappeared north and upon returning, the 4960 was on the point. More runbys with the double header. On to the canyon rim, with more runbys. After we arrived at the canyon rim, the 18 pulled in with the regularly scheduled Grand Canyon train. They then shifted around and got all three engines lined up (first time since the '50's we were told) at the depot. That 2nd photo has El Tovar and the GC depot in it. Now they Y'd the engines and trains. 4960 left light and positioned on the main headed south. We left with the 3751 alone powering the special (great stack talk going up the hill!!). Again did some runbys and after they were done the 3751 and train went out and collected the 4960 again. Southbound double headed, more runbys. Then we took the siding while the regular GC train powered by 18 ran by us. Another great photo op. By the time we got back near Williams it was almost dark. More runbys, then the double headers went to the GC engine house, and when they backed up again, had the 18 on the point. Two runbys featuring triple headed 18, 4960, 3751 in sunset lighting. It was FANTASTIC, just a few miles outside of town. I have video, but entrusted grandson with the difficult job of getting stills, and he didn't do well in the light conditions. I do have one that is in focus, while they were backing up. Might put it on. Meanwhile check my site. All of the above and a few more on there. This has been a great summer, with 4449, 261, 3985, 1003, 3751 and now farewell to 1522 happening. Wish I had won the lotto.
wow fitz sounds like they put on an awesome show for you guys , rumor heard it through the local nrhs chapter who had a few members there , was that a video company rented out 3751, when i don't know, and it left at 4:30am with no whistles for some early morning video work with heavywieght coaches , have you heard anything about this? looking forward to somemore of your great shots. p.s. i would love to trade a photo or two , i love the three steamers in front of the el tovar/grand canyon station i got a killer shot crossing the topock bridge!!!
Gordon, that happened on Friday. When my grandson and I got there about 1115, we saw the two Amrak Genesis pulling the guest train into the GCR maintenance area, and there was no sign of the 3751. That was a disappointment, since the SBRHS guys had said she would be at the depot steamed up when not running specials. She arrived back after dark, and I am not sure about heavyweights, but had about 5 Grand Canyon cars in tow. The last two cars were full of people with serious camera gear. Asking around later on, it seems it was a photographer special at $500 a head or something, and I heard that Dave Goodheart was involved. We shall see, I guess. I'd be happy to trade photos with you. Email me with your druthers and I can send big hi-res copies to you. I would love to have one at the trestle at Topock.
