9733 east glides past SP 106, with the Swift Roadrailer. Note: SP SD9E 4390, trailing the Geep. 8-1996
Those SP SD9E units are probably my favorites from that RR. (Maybe because I like the Milw SD7 and SD9 so much... ) Wish I'd seen, and photo'd more of them. Oh well. Boxcab E50
Am I seeing things! Or are there rails on both sides of the tracks and another in the center! What are they used for?
Just a guess, but would this area be subject to flash flooding or other washouts? Those rails may be to help hold the ballast in place.
They be for future track work ie;rail replacement work.Same as when they drop bundles of sleepers along the right of way, ready for sleeper replacement work.
Jason is right on. That is ribbon rail that is used for rail replacement. Durring this period, SP replaced many sections of rail in the Tehachapi's. I remember seeing empty and loaded ribbon rail trains, making there way up and down the mountain. I have photos of these trains, somewhere .
