I purchases a Peco double slip for use in a small yard area. When I informed a friend about this, he rolled his eyes and said don't use a double slip.

What is your experience with Peco double slips? Are they a hassle? I don't intend for large engines to be running on it, just switchers.

Rick, it's not a direct answer to your question but I have a Trix double slip in a small yard and it works well except...... I CAN back a train straight across it but I cannot back a train through it with the points set to "go to the right" when the cars have truck mounted coulplers, especially the MT's with the deep flanges. They pick the switch. Low profile wheels seem to work bettr backing through it.

The prototype avoids these things when possible, as they are a maintenance headache...
    Maybe you should too!
Peco or not, there's too many moving parts on those things..... [IMG]

Rick, I wouldn't be too worried about using it. One thing I will caution about Peco is a habit of deeper flanges picking the frog when going through the turnout (diverging) route. The bac-to-back of the guard rail is too narrow.
A piece of .015" x .060" strip styrene glued to the back of the guard rail keeps the flange away from the frog and doesn't look too out of place when touched up with paint.

Dick, maybe this will work with the Trix variant too?

And yes, they can be a prototype maintenance headache - been there, done that - but sometimes a necessary evil.
