Today in the US mail I received my First Quarter 2010 New York Central Headlight magazine, published by the NYCSHS. I took a look at the front cover, which featured Mohawk 3001 at Elkhart, and a gentleman standing in front of her. Opening the magazine, the little On the Cover section said "Veteran Big Four engineer Maurice Lewman poses with L-3a 3001, a locomotive he once fired......" Wow! Going further in the magazine, page 4 has a feature article "Maurice E. Lewman, Railroader. From Section Hand to Engineer--45 Years in Big Four Territory, Part 1." It is authored by Fred B. Furminger, and takes up 13 full pages, and will be continued in the next issue. I have not read it yet, but am looking forward to learn of more of LEW's adventures over and above what I already know. Looks like a fitting tribute, LEW. :tb-biggrin:
Thank you .I do feel honored.Fred is the one who should be thanked .He listened to my ramblings and came up with the story. LEW
That's great! I'll have to get a copy of that issue. Actually I should probably join the society. The editor of the magazine lives here in Wellsboro and has a fabulous HO NYC layout.
Bob, that would be Rich Stoving? Do you have any of his recent NYC books featuring Ed May's photography? They are great. :tb-biggrin:
The second quarter Headlight arrived today, and features the second part of Maurice's story, pages 18 through 27. I have not read it all yet, but there is a neat photo of Maurice in the cab of 3001 on the fireman's side, where he once fired that same locomotive. 45 years in any career is a landmark, in railroading it is amazing. Congratulations again, LEW. :tb-biggrin:
My heartiest congratulations to you LEW!!! BTW how much did they charge you for the promo!!!! ROFL!!!! (JK) Charlie
LEW, I'm really looking forward to reading your article, if my brother remembers to bring those issues with him when we get together next month....:tb-wink:
I have finished reading the article, and thank you, LEW, for sharing the stories of your long and illustrious career on the Big Four, Penn-Central and ConRail. :tb-biggrin:
Thanks again and Rich and Fred are great to work with. I only know Rich by phone and e-mail and the flow there is great. Now Fred is like talking to a railroader ,which he was until retirement . Because both of us worked on the railroad it was easy for us to converse and understand each other.I don't think my story is any different than any other railroader and many had a more exciting career. Thanks again to all.LEW
You had a very interesting and varied career, Lew. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Headlight article(s).
