I am modeling my vision of the SP in HO scale...But, I would like to run other roadnames on my track sometimes...for fun, and because I see other road names locomotoives for alot cheaper!
Can some one help me and provide other roads that would operate in/on/near SP tracks?
I figure UP, and BN...i am modeling the late 70's roughly, early 80's-ish...not too prototypical.

    Thansk for any help.

What part of the system? Also, are we talking locomotives run by the SP but belonging to other roads or are we talking other roads' own movements?

Locomotives of the late 70's early 80s you could run of course BN and UP. Also Milwaukee road, Rock Island ( I know the Rock had some run through power go via Santa Rosa NM)Frsico would work as well. C&NW would be a good one. Seeings your not as prototypical as others you can run pretty much anything with a good story.

I am modeling the Northwest...so I am assuming BN, UP.
Thanks for the help...I just see such deals on stuff, I hate being married to the SP, I love it...but I might be able to get some more power on my layout at great rates...of course I am a SP lover.

BN, UP, and logging/industrial lines, depending on what sorts of lines.

the ATSF ran on SP tracks in some areas (Tehachapi Loop) as BNSF still does today.

True. He said he was modeling the Northwest. We didn't get much ATSF up here in that time period.

I suppose Western Pacific is a possibility as well, and MAAAAYBE Milwaukee Road, but that's kind of a stretch. Milwaukee Road had trackage rights over some of BN's lines and did have access to Portland during the 1970s, but any likely meets would have been confined mostly to the Portland Terminal yard and the trackage around Union Station.

Are you only talking Power or revenue cars which could be just about anything. Heck, I have seen a D&H hopper in Colorado and California in recent years...

    Thanks again guys.
I was thinking BN and UP. I am in northern california, The Northwestern PAcific ran up here...then, the North Coast Railroad in their old beater SP GP9's.
Just from what I know still exists today, I feel that UP and BN would be the most obvious in my little railroad fantasy land.
I was speaking mostly to power, notso much as revenue cars. My brother sent me a picture of a 40' SP box car on Long Island NY the other day...I know I can pull anything off in that regard...but I still only run Golden West Service, Simpson Timber, SP, Trailer Car, and BN...so far.

I would definitely add D&RGW, as they interchanged heavily at Salt Lake City, UT. WP is another good one.

OP said last 70's thru mid 80's so the above stuff is too late. I too am interested in 70's and 80's SP to some degree as I lived in Davis/Sacramento during that time frame. I definitely remember UP engines mixed with SP over Donner Pass. Plus I've seen photo's in my D&RGW books showing D&RGW tunnel motors in northern California when thy strayed off line.

Since not all the locos that came w/ the BN merger got repainted right away you could have CB&Q, GN, NP & SP&S painted locos in pool power or run thrus on your layout. They all showed up alot on the WP in early 70s. And you could have WP also, either silver/orange or Perlman green.
