    Hello again,
I have always had a problem with space and model railroading. It's been a huge issue with any layout I plan. Recently, I've been looking into Narrow Gauge Modules and a mining layout. What really intrigued me was the idea of an animated layout (one that actually functions). When I brought it to the attention of my father (I was thinking about doing it in Nn3 to save space) he suggested just doing it On30 to make it detailed (We both enjoy building and detailing the layout more than necessarally running it. But running it is great too!). Unfortunately, everytime I try and sit down to plan it out, I can never figure out how to start!
Ive narrowed down what I want in the modules:
-A functioning coal mine (Possibly a diarama of the caverns underneath for fun, but that can come later)
-Some form of a Coal Tipple or Tresle at the other end of the line
-An engine house and some form of a storage track or two (complete with turntable)
-A bit of scenic run, even if it's only for a foot or two. Maybe a waterfall or something (?)
-All this on modules no bigger than 4x3'. Modules can't add up to over 12' in length either. Basically, it's pretty tricky!
Any ideas? Help maybe? I'll keep sketching and try to put some designs up to be torn appart.

You have some thoughts of what you wish to include, so that is solid progress.

Have you seen the topic here on the HOn3 "Silver Creek" being built by Wolfgang Dudler? If not, you might enjoy looking at what he's accomplished. I'd believe you would get a few ideas on at least some possibilties for module bases themselves.

Here is a thought. Why don't you put a town on one end seperating the layout in half with either a canyon and/or a mountain and on the other end of the layout will be your mine.

    Just a thought

Yes actually, I did happen to see his HOn3 layout, and enjoyed it very much. Now, Ryan, you hit my layout idea right on the nose! Well, how about you just see for yourself:

So, that's all I have at the moment. Feel free to rip it apart!

I made a few changes to the track plan. I got rid of the runaround near the top of the line at the coal mine, and instead placed it over by the mine itself. I also extended the actual building (After being inspired by Mr. Xaviers layout. Looking good so far!) to be a little larger. I also placed a few more objects in the foreground of the mine. Finally, I straightened out the line over the scenic portion of the layout. Not completely straight, but I got rid of the awkward curves and made it a little more smooth.

Well, we're planning on starting this weekend, so does anyone have any building tips about scratch building and On30 in general?

    Much apreciated,

    Alex

Having a wye on Module 1, you should be OK without the runaround. I am wondering about the same on Module 3- No ability to run around.

Looking forward to seeing some photos of progress!

Gah, Boxcab, you are completely right. Perhaps I should have another line next to the Supply Building and make that a runaround track... if I have the space. Unfortunately, size is playing a big role in this one.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the line coming off the turntable in Module 3 extends to staging underneath Module 2. (Just one track staging for loading and unloading assorted or "visiting" cars).

    I have one more question:
CONSTRUCTION: I thought that I would construct the layout by stacking up and glueing 2" insulation foam onto 1/2" plywood sheets and going from there. Is this a good way to go?

Nothing wrong with laminating the foam as you suggest. Depending upon how you frame things, you could go with a thinner pywood, or even none at all. For weight savings.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I actually think that instead of doing the insulation foam, doing the spray, expanding foam. From what I've heard, it carves and acts just like the extruded sheets. But, we'll see when the time comes! For now, I plan and pray it comes out like I want it to!

Take your time, practice techniques and it will end up exactly as you desire.
