I saw a very old paint scheme on a boxcar today, and I was wondering who else has seen old paint designs on active railroads. Today I saw an ACL boxcar. Since ACL disolved in 1967, this would make the paint over 41 years old! I'm only 42!!!!! Currently, this boxcar is parked on Seminole Gulf Railway MOW trackage in Ft Myers, Florida. It appears to be a tool car. Ack! http://www.freewebs.com/ultramarine/DSC_0146.JPG
We had a pair of Penn Central hoppers on a train a couple of weeks ago. A Seaboard Coast Line covered hopper was on an outbound empty unit train last week.
These look old Some of these look pretty old. Except for the graffiti. And the reporting marks. I wish they didn't resize them automatically!
There is an WABASH flat car or 2 floating around. There is on kept inside the Old car shop building in Decatur, Illinois for shop use. There are still some Illinois Terminal cars in General service. Last year I saw a Great Northern Woodchip hopper still in service (blue) in St.Louis.
In my trips to Osborn Yard and other places,I've seen: Chicago & Northwestern (CNW) boxcars Seaboard Coast Line(SCL) hoppers Chessie System boxcars and hoppers Family Lines hoppers and boxcars Missouri Pacific Lines boxcar(that was last week) Southern Pacific autoracks Great Northern autoracks Conrail freight cars(in all varieties) B&O gondola There may be some others,I just can't remember them all. Should give everyone an idea of how old some of the cars I've seen are.
... this is a great thread topic! I was thinking the same thing a few months ago and started documenting "fallen flags" on various cars. Indeed, with the glut of boxcars in the system, you see tons with stenciled reporting marks but still sporting their older/original schemes. I'll try to post more later.
