Got hold of an old Marx 3 rail train set from a friend. It must be over 50 years old. noticed track says Lionel. Is there much interest and value in these sets? Dave B.
02 Nov 2007 Good morning Dave B. There is still a certain amount of interest as many of these Marx trains, with the engines being powered by clock spring or electric - were the first trains for many people - including me. There was (and still may be) a small company still making the Marx trains. I purchased Marx trains for my children as 'I hoped' they would begin to enjoy operating model trains at a young age. These are still around the house. The wind up clock spring motors - well they took took care of the springs early. As for the track being made by Lionel, both the O27 Marx and Lionel gauge were often interchanged together for expanding a 'floor layout'. For your set, I suspect someone swaped out the Marx track for Lionel track. The set being 50+ years old should have a good value - depending upon condition. You could have it appraised, however watching the Antique Road Show - having Lionel track instead of Marx track could bring down the value - as a set. I see where you live in Montreal. My wife and I were up there in July for a one day sight seeing trip. We drove up from Rouses Point to the tourist center (square), took a coach tour, later had lunch at the underground Burger King and even later - departed Montreal during rush hour, heading back to Rouses Point. Our Montreal visit was a very good part of our '50th year' honeymoon trip. We took a lot of pictures and enjoyed being there. Larry @ SCRS.
Glad you had a good time in Montreal. I work in the 24-story office building on the south side of the square, next to the taller hotel with the funny windows. Another Dave B. from Montreal.
