For each engine listed, which was the last railroad to run it in revenue service, and when? I divided the question into two categories that should be self-explanatory: Class I and Shortline/Industrial. FM H-24-66 Train Master (Class 1 only) Baldwin AS-616 (Class 1 only) Baldwin DR-12-8-1500/2 Centipede (Class 1 only) FM C-Liners (specify last model in use) (Class I, Shortline/Industrial) EMD F3 (Class 1 only) GE U25C (Class I, Shortline/Industrial) EMD BL2 (Class 1 only) Baldwin DT-6-6-2000 (Class I, Shortline/Industrial) EDIT: I knew there were some I wanted to mention that I'd forgotten. Since nobody's given answers for the original set, I'll go ahead and add these: EMD FT (Class I, Shortline/Industrial) EMD SD35 (Class I only) GE U28B (Class I only) FM H-10-44 (Class 1 only) And add RT-624 to the DT-6-6-2000 listing.
Amazingly, four F3s are still in service... sort of. ICG rebuilt them to F10s, and they're now owned by Metro-North. The oldest is former GM&O 880A http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=362128 now Metro-North 413. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=214860 (the trailing unit) It doesn't look much like an F3 anymore.
Believe that Seaboard's Centipedes ran until 1960, which unless a Pennsy fan comes forward, was last for the U.S. Believe I read an article in trains that N de M (Mexico) ran theirs until 1963.
FTs in the South In the book, Outbound Trains, Jim Boyd explains that the last two FTs in the South were operated by the shortline Georgia, Ashburn, Sylvester, & Camilla Railroad. They were the GAS&C #16 and Georgia Northern #14, which was derailed at the GAS&C-GN crossing at Bridgeboro.
I know PRR's Centipedes lasted into the early 60s as helpers http://www.byz.org/~morven/Railway32/diesel/index.html and that the NdeM units lasted to the late 60s.
I think that the Bangor & Arrostook had the last BL2 's. They bought the other engines from the few buyers that had ordered these creatures.
According to http://www.train-video.com/michvhs.html the LS&I operated the last U25C(s). How long did they last? EDIT: Must remember to search longer before posting. http://www.railroadmichigan.com/lakesuperiorishpeming.html has an all-time diesel roster. The LS&I had two U25Cs. Both were retired in 1989, but one hadn't been in active service since 1984.
Montana Rail Link operates SD35's... But they are a class II RR... The U28B's... Didn't the 'Wobbly (Western Pacific) have them? How long did they last in UP service post-merger?
If the WP had them (which I don't recall them doing), they didn't last to the merger. See http://utahrails.net/all-time/up-x-wp.php
The Wobbly (WP) had U30Bs. The first 5 units (originally 751-755, later 3051-3055) were delivered with the same radiator configuration as late U28Bs. To the best of my knowledge, all of the units except 3051 (which is at the WP Museum in Portola) were scrapped by the UP. In addition to the above link, Frank Brehm's website at "WPLives.COM" has a series of excellent writeups on the various locomotive models owned by the WP. The U30 writeup can be found at http://www.wplives.com/motivepower/drosters/U30B/u30b.html .
I believe that CP had the last C-Liners, retiring the last in 1975. See http://members.shaw.ca/cprclc3/album3.html
SP had rebuilt SD35s that lasted until the merger with UP. Also had three non-rebuilt that lasted into the '90s. They served as switchers in Colton Yard in LA. Probably the last class 1 with them. There are quite a few left in class 2...
