If I buy the Digitrax Zephyr, can I run 4 locs indepent or do I need some extra's like boosters or throttles. The layout is small 3 by 6 in N-scale. Paul
I saw a Zephyr demonstrated (and tried it myself) at a show, and I was impressed enough to decide to purchase the system for my new layout. If you have a simple layout, I think the Zephyr would be perfectly suitable. Not sure about large layouts with lots of activity. (But the system can be upgraded, like all Digitrax models).
4 locos independent? Piece of cake in N scale. They draw probably a tenth of an amp each (system puts out 2.5 amps of power) so don't worry about the power level. I just purchased this for my 5-piece Ntrak yard set, and it works great. You may want to add additional throttles if you are having 4 trains run independently. The Jump feature would be great for two additional throttles. This allows you to use a standard transformer as a DCC throttle. Excellent selling point for Digitrax.
The Zephyr right now is the best entry level system there is. You can boot it up to handle a very large layout, with extra boosters (power) and additional cabs (throttles).
You might consider the Lenz system. For not too much more money you can get the Lenz Set 90. I don't know the costs right now because Bruce is in the process of redesigning the Litchfield Station site...but it's not that much more I don't think. Having never used a single DCC system (maybe not the best way to go but oh well), I just ordered the Lenz Set 100. To me this seemed to be the best bang for the buck. It had more capabilities, a better warranty, and significantly lower cost than any of the Digitrax systems (except the Zephyr is cheaper of course). The best part is that I will probably never have to expand as this system should more than serve my needs.
Has anyone used a DC powerpack with the Zephyr yet? I'm wondering if the new bachman dial and powerbrick style will work.
I'm not sure of your question about a dc power pack with the Zephyr so I will answer both, figuring one of em will be what you are after. 1) The Zephyr comes with its own power source so you don't need a dc power pack. 2) The Zephyr will run trains using a power pack, but the power pack must be "non-pulsing" which leaves out most MRC packs. I know guys have used the "jump port" and used power packs and seem to be happy with it. My understanding is that there might be some "under power issues with it" but I am open to being corrected on that possible mis-statement.
#2 was my question. Bachman's newest trainsets come with a new type of powerpack. it is a power brick (wallwort) computer deally The brick provides DC and the hand unit provides the speed and direction. I'm wondering if this will work. It should NOT be a pulse type supply. Also, I would assume MRC would work as long you left pulse mode turned off.
