On my way home from work this morning, I went past East Yard here in GJ, and spotted the rail train on the main. Interesting enough, power for this train was an SD45 and an SD40T-2, both in UP colors. The SD45 was 2795, and the tunnel motor was in the 8500 series.
Help me out here- what are the ancestries of these locomotives?

    Y-Bob,

The SD45 will take time. The T-2 had a three foot gap between the front trucks and the fuel tank. That is a trade mark DRGW unit. They were the only SD40T-2's with the smaller SD40 fuel tanks. BTY, the T-2 is ex DRGW 5366.

Here's the rest of the story. A good guess on the numbers would be as follows

    UP 2795-SD40-2
    ex UP 4745-SD40-2
    ex ex SP 88400 SD45

This was one of a total of 33 units, numbered UP 4733-4765; leased from CIT Group, Inc.; rebuilt from SD39's, SD40's, SD45's, and SD45M's to SD40-2's by National Railway Equipment (NRE), Mount Vernon, IL and Dixmore, IL. The rebuilding to SD40-2's included qualification and repairs as needed of all companents, upgrading of electrical controls to Dash 2 standards, and installation of a 3,000 HP, 16 cylinder engine.

Got a funny feeling this unit was just renumbered in the past month. If it was in December, I will know in a few days when I get the list for my web site. I was also looking for info on UP 2793. You would not believe the bag of worms there is in the new number series this unit is in.

Thanks for the info. The 2795 showed signs of a recent renumbering (clean paint on an otherwise grimy engine)>

Top it all off, UP has an SD40 (2814, IIRC) mated with a deturboed GP40-2 (we discussed that one earlier) as switchers here in Junction.

    Y-Bob,

There is a bunch of rebuilt stuff in that number series including ex SP SD45T-2's either with T-2 cooling or other like 40 or 45 series long hoods.

I forgot to add that some of them get renumbered in the morning only to find out there is another unit still with that number. Then they have to go through the whole process again to re-renumber it the next day.

I saw an SD70M in UP colors in the 3990 number series. Would this be one of SP's SD70s repainted & renumbered just below the 4000-4999 series for this particular model?
