I would be interested in knowing how many builder plates there are around from Hudsons (and other NYC locos). I see that 5432 has a home.I have one from 5330 as well as several other "lesser" NYC engines. MY engine was hard to find photos of and I wolud still like to find ,more......
I have seen #5405, and have heard that #5303 and #5427 still exist. 5400's are pretty scarce, based on a search that has spanned about 35 years. Niagara plates are also scarce...but I have seen #6022, and also #6020. They were aluminum and some broke right on the engines... What nos. have you identified?
I have plates from 4-6-4 5330,4-6-2 3345(B&A 502),0-6-0 6664(564) and 2-8-2 2152(52). Also have some (UGH) diesel plates.
It was just brought to my attention,by me,that I left out one of my NYC builders plates.I also have 2-8-0 6728.It was my first NYC plate having bought it in 1969. I know that there are some at the museum in Elkhart but don't know which ones. I would like to see an inventory of what they have there, seems like that would be a nice summer vacation job for one of us to volunteer to do.... Another nice list to see would be made up of all NYC hardware that is still around (not including lanterns as everyone seems to have some of them)in an anonymous form of course because NONE of us want midnight visitors. Ron
A very long time ago Bob Spaugh of the Elkhart Museum brought some hardware to the annual NYCSHS Business meeting at Cleveland for us to enjoy. As I recall, there were number plates with ovals for #5405 and #6020. He may have some others.
Sniff. I don't even own a replica. Tom, saw your input on the other NYC forum that Niagara plates had a blue background and were one piece. How does that differ from the J-3 plates? I was only a kid but don't remember any colors on any of the plates. Dirt, maybe?
From what I recall and have read the builders plates were black. The ovals and the number plates on the Niagara's were blue.I don't recall seeing anything where the builders plates were blue. The only Niagara's I saw were at the end and I didn't see any blue plates.Perhaps when they were new..... Then again the builders plates were hidden behind the ears....so who knows.... Ron
Ron, mea culpa. In my senility I mixed up builders and ovals. The comment Tom made on the other forum had to do with the NYC oval under the headlight. That's what my question pertains to, not builder's plates. Sorry.
I do not have the Hudson or Mohawk drawings for their number plates and ovals, but I have heard that they were blue or black.
