I used to go to bed every night with my Bearcat scanner on. I could listen to trains being dispatched from Richmond all the way to Stockton, and sometimes a little beyond. One night while listening to the horn of an Eastbound blowing through town, I listened to the conversations between the crew and the dispatcher, and a couple other crews, all moves and meets being cordinated efficently by all involved. Listening back then there was a sense of pride among everyone. It didn't sound like men working, but rather men doing something they enjoyed, sometimes joking with each other over the air as they made the meets and moves.
As I lay in my bed, listening to it all, the original train I heard was approaching Stockton. For those that don't know the area, the ATSF Main Lines enter Stockton and goes under several overpasses, becomes double tracked, passes the beautiful station, and then the Interlock and then Mormon Yard.
I pictured the train slowing from its race across the levees entering Stockton, when over the scanner I hear the frantic calls of the rear brakeman with an emergency. As the caboose was passing under one of these overpasses, someone threw a beer bottle which struck the conductor in the head, seriously injuring him. The professionalism of everyone was amazing as I think back to it now. As a boy I was sitting up in my bed, waiting to hear more. By the time the train reached the Interlock an Ambulance was waiting to get the injuried Conductor and the train stopped at Morman Yard.
I always wondered what happened to that Conductor, and after I started working on the railroad I always paid attention to people on overpasses as I passed underneith.
One day, in Warren OH, while operating a local, I noticed a group of kids on an overpass ahead. I noticed them even more as they 'ducked' out of sight as I got closer, and when I was almost at the bridge, they suddenly popped up and threw a couple bricks down on the locomotive. I moved just in time as one hit the cab sunshade, and then the armrest my arm was on. Had I not heard that incident all those years ago on my Bearcat, I may have paid those kids no mind, and possibly been injuried seriously myself that day. :)

I was braking out of Richmond about 6 years ago. I was riding the second unit(SD40-2), nice and stretched out. Nice, cool spring day, windows open. We were between Figarden and Fresno, the Hogger was blowing the horn pretty good. Next thing I see is a group of kids, all throwing rocks. Before I could get the window closed, one rock hit the window frame, grazed my sunglasses, and hit the sunshade on the way out. Man was I hot:tb-mad:

I was pretty lucky that day.

I listened to the scanner a lot in my teen years. Still had DTC on the Coast Line. Brings back a lot of memories.

Ah something to be said about sleeping to the relaxing sounds of a dispatcher droning on. That is until they start asking if I plan on taking that signal anytime soon. LOL

Ah to just be a railfan again.

He's actually saying "nought" (sometimes spelled "naught" depending on where you are). "Nought" means "zero".

I fell asleep once... Still in my "FNG" phase... My Hogger went to the second unit, I tried reading, had the cab lights on, window open. Failed miserably... Woke with a start, clear block, grabbed the Hogger, and away we went... Got about 20 cars out of the siding, the DS calls, said "call the Chief"... The Chief asks, "what took so long to take the signal?"
    "Letting the air pump"
    "For 26 minutes?"
"Uhmmmm..... OK, I'll level with you.....":tb-embarrassed:

They watched me like a hawk for about a month after that...

around here we have shootings by the tracks haulting train traffic
people putting blue pbastic garbage cans on the fourth of july keeping the train there for 5 hours with the conductor, trainman, and they even called a track foreman that was done for the day for over time to come and assist them man there was alot of radio chatter that night i took my bearcat scanner out with me and listend to it wale we did some fireworks
we have people putting plastic santas on the tracks (still laughing about that) and the crew said "ye'haw (3 second pause) i think we just hit santa" that was funny ,
i was playing with my trains and all i hear on my scanner is that and i start laughing
my dad was laughing in the other room watching the game
we have crews joking around all the time
something cool is wen i am listening to the scanner and a train is going by blowing for a crossing and repeating a warrent i hear the horn blow on the scanner and then outside
i hear trains pulling up the mountain (reading and northern to laurel run) wale i am in bed and they are so loud that i can hear the wheelslip

thats all for now i will reply if i remember anything else
