Hi folks, new to the board here and looking for some input on Model G trains. I want to get my 3-yr old a starter set as he is fascinated by trains. I don't want a battery powered set. I would like a steam type model w/smoke and whistle. I've seen various vendors on the net, but would like to be armed with some better info before purchasing. Does anyone have some pointers they would share with me as far as what to look for and what to avoid? Major differences between manufacturers? Are there different types of rails or are they all the same and compatible w/each other? Good places to purchase on the net, ie. best prices and cheap freight? From what I've seen I should look to pay close to $200.00 for a set, then should also get more track.
Of course the first post I read is how expensive the model G trains and accessories are...
    Thanks in advance,
    David

BTW, I did see Gabriel's post but wanted to go a little further in addressing my particular questions. Sorry if it's a bit redundant.
    Regards,

    David:
One suggestion is to check out the Aristocraft forum. They are strictly a G scale group. The url is http://www.aristocraft.com/ You probably will be able to get all of your answers there.

Also check out both www.the-gauge.com (not too much 1 gauge though) and www.mylargescale.com. You may find the help you need there. I think that, even for a 'toy' type set, you may be very hard-pressed to find anything at the $200 point--I could be wrong.
