Hi All, I just got hold of the Gloor Craft Diesel Service Facility. Being new to kit biulding I would like your opinion on weather to paint the pieces before puting together or after??? Tks
Bob, I haven't built any of the Gloor Craft kits, but my experience with wood kits is to use a enamal spray paint to primer everything FIRST. DON'T use water based paints without priming. The wood will more than likely warp. (I learned this the hard way ) After priming, paint the walls the colors you desire, with your favorite paint. The reason for painting first is that the usual wood glues won't take paint too well. Hope things go well. Take your time, follow the directions. They are usually the BEST way to put the kit together. Jeff Augsburg & Concord R.R. (a fictional shortline in Central Illinois) http://www.pegnsean.net/~revnjeff
Bob, I always paint the pieces first, while they are still on the sprue. Remember though some touch up will be necessary as things get scratched up as you build. Start with a primer as Jeff suggests. Will you be brush painting or air-brush painting? This makes a huge difference in approach. John
Its a good idea to spray wooden pieces lightly with primer, let dry, then lightly sand the little burrs, splinter hairs and dust bumps off, and spray again. On plastic parts, yes, do spray primer while still on the sprue, BUT wash the mold release off first! After gluing, I have sometimes lightly sprayed another shot of primer to cover the glue so the color paint doesn't separate at the joints. Use wire, or string, and clothes pins to hang the sprues up for drying over night. (Even lacquer sometimes dryes slowly in damp weather.)
