Went on a church retreat this weekend and spent some time after it was over on Sunday casing a few trains through Byer's Canyon and then on to Gore Canyon. Here is a Westbound coal empties headig down grade through the East end of Byer's Canyon. More pics to come...hopefully!

Just as I pulled into a turnout in Byer's Canyon this loaded coal train came through. No time to set up a shot of the head end power so the donkey will have to do.

Here are a series of shots in the upper part of Gore Canyon. Empty coal train downgrade between Kremmling and Radium.

    Anyone know about this car?

I chased this car down on one of the empty coal trains. Pretty difficult to get a good shot when they opened it up to around 40 MPH. I have never seen this car nor heard anything about it. I have heard they have put some Rio Grande Logos on a few hoppers to keep them current. Is this the case here too or is this part of the SP DRGW merger?

    Awesome catch! And ultra-rare, too!!!
I think that may have been a post SP/DRGW merger experiment.

    Straight from Wig-Wag's Trainworx page:
BTW, nice Gore area shots! A great place for monster telephoto lenses, eh?

How long did you have to wait at Byers and Gore to catch a train?

Beautiful shots. The "Approaching Radium" and the second before it really show how insignificant a railroad is in a geography as vast as the West can be....WOW!

Here are a few more pics from the day. A rock train waits in the siding for an empty coal train.

The clouds have rolled in and the sun is getting lower. Here Amtrak enters the South end of Gore Canyon running about 2 hours late.

Just around this S-curve Amtrak will meet 2 empty coal trains adding a few more minutes it is already running behind.

Last shot of the day. Here we are again in Byer's Canyon. Amtrak is making pretty good time. I was guilty of excessive speed in getting to the Canyon before it did! Thankfully my driving record and pocket book did not feel the effect!

How hard was that shot to bag? Right off the highway, or a decent hike?

Fantastic shot!!! I love the low light. Looks sharp to me--was it blurry at all? How far is Byers from Gore?

    Hemi,
The meet was easy to get!! Parked the truck and walk 20-30 feet. Byer's Canyon was the same. Actually all these shots were taken from the road. This was more of a scouting trip to see where a good entry point would be into Gore Canyon for day of hiking. I think I found a couple of places. Need my railfan budy back here who is willing to take a hike! I am thinking that pics will be better if I stay on the other side of the CO river. I may have to because there aren't many places to get across to get to the track side.

Glad you liked the early evening shot. I am not real happy with my digital. It does not do well with low light. I am not real happy with my photo editing program either. I seem to be loosing deifinition when I resize the photos. I will have to play around with it some more.
